Our Community – History & Background

The history and development of our Catholic Communities of Mitchelton Keperra/Grovely and Samford have been well documented in the excellent book “Living Stones”. There are also several recorded histories of the development of these north-western suburbs but these only go back about 150 years at most. What do we know about the earlier history of our area before white settlement? Who were the original inhabitants of these Western Hills districts and what happened to them? Are there still descendants of the original Aboriginal people living in our community? What significant sites remain such as Samford’s Bora Ring?

Connection to Elders – If you would like to explore some of these questions and get a better understanding of the history of our local area come to the Daley Centre behind St William’s Church in Dawson Parade on Friday 19 April at 10 am for morning tea and meeting with Traditional Elders who know some of the history of the area.
